Katse Dam

Accommodation on route to the Katse Dam in Lesotho

The Katse Dam as part of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project is a must visit for any tourist hoping to get a glimpse of the engineering wonders of Africa. The water flows from the Lesotho Highlands to a number of dams and then tunnel all the way through the Maluti Mountains to the Free State Province of South Africa from where water is also channelled to Pretoria and Johannesburg.

Why visit the Katse Dam?

Apart from being the largest water project in Africa, it boasts a huge dam wall and absolutely stunning views of the water lake amongst majestic mountains. The flooded dam wall is a whopping 185 metres high and the dam extends as far as 45 kilometres. Imagine, water as far as the eye can see! It is the second largest dam in Africa. Only Lake Volta Akosombo in the country of Ghana is larger. You can undertake walks around the Katse Dam and enjoy the amazing scenery.

The best views can be enjoyed from the Mafika Lisiu Pass and you may also want to visit the tourist and information centre specially designed to inform visitors about the project. You will appreciate the exact scaled model of the whole dam project. The Lesotho Highlands Visitor Authority Centre offers specially arranged tours of the whole area. While there, a visit to the Lesotho Botanical Gardens at the Katse Dam can also be undertaken.
